Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow


Location: 2 km east of Kilcoole, south of Greystones on the east coast of Co. Wicklow

Description: An area of seasonally flooded wet grassland behind a shingle beach/railway embankment. A number of marshy pools persist into early summer after the winter floodwater recedes. The reserve is part of Kilcoole Marsh, with its brackish lagoons and salt marshes


Birds: Wintering waterfowl include Pale-bellied Brent and Greylag Geese and a variety of waders. In spring and autumn, the pools attract a variety of passage waders. Rare migrants seen on or in the vicinity of the reserve have included Water Pipit, Lesser Yellowlegs and Night Heron.


Viewing: Parking at the coastal car park at Kilcoole, the reserve is best viewed from the path above the beach
