CBS - what does it involve

Are you available to give just 3-4 hours of your time this spring/ summer?

  • The CBS is based on a random selection of 1 km squares throughout the country - 300-400 are covered each year by more than 200 people. Is there a square available near you?
  • Each square should be visited twice per year.
  • The first visit should be completed between 1st April and 15th May, for early migrants and resident species.
  • The second visit should be completed between 16th May and 30th June, for late migrants.
  • Each visit takes between 1.5 and 2 hours.
  • Within each square you are required to walk two parallel transects, each 1km long. The transect routes for most squares have already been set up. You will be provided with a map like this:

  • You are required to record all the birds that you see or hear while walking along your transect routes.
  • You should be reasonably confident in the identification of Ireland's common and widespread countryside birds - can you identify these birds?
  • Further details about the CBS can be found here.
  • Test your knowledge by doing our ID test (MS Powerpoint required, use the "save as" option)
  • If you'd like to take part, please contact Dick Coombes.

To those already taking part, thank you for your help.  It is important to complete both visits to give us the best picture of diversity and abundance of species in your square.  Enjoy the fieldwork!
