Monitoring of wild birds is achieved through our research and survey programmes, many of which are carried out at national level, and with the help of a dedicated network of BirdWatch Ireland volunteers and conservation staff of the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Some of these projects are ongoing, such as the Corncrake monitoring project and the Countryside Bird Survey, while others are run on a cyclical basis, such as the Chough Survey which is carried out every 10 years.
These projects have helped us to identify Important Bird Areas and Birds of Conservation Concern in Ireland.
